Lesson 10: The Science of Social Attractiveness: What Your Face Communicates Before You Say a Word

Have you ever been asked, “Are you tired?” when you felt perfectly rested? Or “Is something wrong?” when you were simply thinking?

Those moments reveal something fascinating: the expression someone sees and the emotion you feel are not always the same. Before we speak, our faces are already being interpreted.

In a well-known study, psychologists Janine Willis and Alexander Todorov found that people formed impressions of unfamiliar faces after just one-tenth of a second. Their judgments included attractiveness, likeability, and trustworthiness. More viewing time often increased confidence in those impressions—but the study did not establish that those impressions were accurate. (pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov)

That distinction matters. A face cannot tell us whether someone is kind, capable, or trustworthy. Yet its appearance can influence our first response.

For me, this opens a more interesting conversation about beauty: How can we help your face express the vitality and warmth you feel inside?

Attractiveness includes how we connect

Think about someone whose face lights up when they see you. Perhaps their eyes soften, their smile unfolds, and you immediately feel welcome.

Research on smiling has found that a smile can increase ratings of both attractiveness and kindness. Expression contributes to the impression a face creates, beyond its individual features. (pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov)

This is why I believe movement deserves a central place in aesthetic care. The way your eyes smile, your eyebrows respond, and your cheeks lift is part of your identity.

My goal is to preserve that language. A face should still be able to tell a story.

Skin quality contributes to the picture

When we discuss facial rejuvenation, wrinkles often receive most of the attention. But researchers have also studied how the distribution of color across the skin affects perception.

In a study published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, more even skin coloration was associated with higher ratings of perceived health, attractiveness, and youthfulness. These were judgments of appearance, not measurements of a person’s actual health. (pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov)

The interesting takeaway is that the visual impression of a face involves more than lines. Skin tone belongs in the conversation, too.

At Skin IQ, this supports my philosophy of looking at the whole face. When someone asks to look “fresher,” we begin by exploring what that means to them. Is it uneven pigmentation? Texture? A change in facial contours? Or an expression that seems more serious than they feel?

Those are different concerns, and they deserve an individual plan.

Your face deserves a thoughtful approach

This is the thinking behind the Skin IQ Structural Aging Method™: assessing how different aspects of the face work together before choosing a treatment.

During a consultation, I want to understand what you notice, what you would like to improve, and what you love about your face and want to preserve. We consider skin quality, underlying support, and natural expression together.

The studies on first impressions do not prove that an aesthetic procedure will make someone more likeable or improve their relationships. They help us understand perception.

Our treatment decisions still need to reflect your goals, suitability, and realistic expectations.

For me, a beautiful result is one in which you recognize yourself—and feel comfortable being expressive.

Beauty has room for individuality

You do not owe the world a constant smile. A thoughtful expression, an asymmetrical grin, or lines that appear when you laugh can be part of what makes your face memorable.

I want aesthetic care to leave room for all of that.

Your face has accompanied you through decades of experience. Caring for it can be a way of honoring yourself while allowing your personality to remain fully present.

Your face introduces you. Your warmth, humor, and presence continue the conversation.
