Most of us think aging is measured by birthdays.
Modern longevity research suggests otherwise.
Scientists now distinguish between chronological age (the number of years you’ve been alive) and biological age—how old your body’s cells and tissues actually behave.
Two people may both be 55 years old, yet one may have the cardiovascular health, muscle strength, and metabolic function of someone in their 40s, while the other may have biological markers more consistent with someone in their 60s.
The exciting news is that biological age is not entirely fixed. Lifestyle, sleep, nutrition, exercise, stress, inflammation, and environmental exposures all appear to influence how quickly our bodies age.
Your Skin Has Its Own Biological Age
Here’s something even more fascinating.
Emerging research suggests your skin may not age at the same pace as the rest of your body.
Your heart, muscles, brain, and skin each respond differently to genetics and to the cumulative effects of sun exposure, inflammation, hormones, pollution, nutrition, and daily habits.
This means your skin can appear biologically “older” or “younger” than the rest of you.
For example:
A lifelong runner with excellent cardiovascular health may still have prematurely aged skin after decades of unprotected sun exposure.
